The Best Food You’re Probably Not Eating Enough Of (And It’s Dirt Cheap)

Everybody’s looking for the next “superfood.”
Goji berries from the Himalayas.Sea moss from the ocean.A powdered root harvested under a full moon by monks named Steve.
Meanwhile, one of the most powerful foods for your metabolism, gut, blood sugar, inflammation, and overall health has been sitting quietly in the produce section this whole time…
Cabbage.
Yep. Plain old cabbage.
And honestly? It might be one of the most underrated foods on the planet.
Why Cabbage Deserves More Respect
Cabbage is part of the cruciferous vegetable family — the same group as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and kale.
These vegetables contain compounds linked to:
Better detoxification
Improved insulin sensitivity
Reduced inflammation
Hormone balance
Gut health support
Cellular protection against oxidative stress
But cabbage has a few advantages over the others.
It’s cheap. It lasts forever in the fridge. It’s incredibly versatile. And unlike some “health foods,” people will actually eat it consistently.
That matters.
Because the best healthy food isn’t the one with the fanciest marketing. It’s the one you’ll keep eating long enough to actually help you.
Cabbage and Gut Health
This is one of the biggest reasons I like cabbage so much.
Cabbage contains fiber and natural compounds that help feed beneficial gut bacteria. And when your gut bacteria are healthier, they produce things like butyrate and other short-chain fatty acids that help support the gut lining and overall digestive health.
That’s one reason fermented cabbage foods like sauerkraut and kimchi have been around for generations.
Your great-grandparents didn’t know the word “microbiome.”But they knew fermented foods made people feel better.
Funny how that works.
It May Help Blood Sugar More Than People Realize
One of the biggest problems in modern nutrition is that people are eating foods that digest way too fast.
Cereal. Crackers. Bread. Chips. Granola bars.Basically adult baby food.
Cabbage is the opposite.
It’s bulky, high in fiber, low in digestible carbs, and incredibly filling for very few calories.
That combination can help reduce overeating while supporting more stable blood sugar levels.
And here’s the interesting part…
A lot of people think healthy eating means tiny portions and being hungry all day.
But you can eat a giant skillet full of cabbage, ground beef, butter, garlic, and seasoning and feel full for hours without wrecking your blood sugar.
That’s real-world nutrition.
The Sulfur Connection Most People Ignore
Cabbage is also rich in sulfur-containing compounds.
Now before somebody says, “Sulfur sounds scary”…
Sulfur is actually critical for the body.
Your body uses sulfur for:
Detoxification pathways
Joint support
Skin health
Hair and nails
Glutathione production (one of the body’s major antioxidants)
This is one reason cruciferous vegetables have been studied so heavily in health research.
Your body isn’t designed to run on protein bars and powdered donuts.
It’s designed to work with real foods.
Red Cabbage May Be Even More Powerful
If you really want to level things up, try red cabbage.
That deep purple color comes from compounds called anthocyanins — the same type of compounds found in blueberries.
These compounds have been associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
And unlike blueberries… cabbage doesn’t cost $9.47 for six berries and a leaf.
One Of The Best “Stretch Foods” Ever
This is another reason I use cabbage constantly in recipes.
It stretches meals.
Add cabbage to:
Ground beef bowls
Stir fry
Egg roll in a bowl
Soups
Skillet meals
Roasted sheet pan meals
Salads
Slaws
Sauerkraut
Tacos
Fried cabbage bowls
OR, this $3 Meal HERE
You can take one pound of meat and turn it into a huge satisfying meal.
That’s good for your metabolism AND your grocery bill.
The Biggest Mistake People Make With Cabbage
They boil it into sadness.
That’s the problem.
A lot of people think they hate cabbage… but what they actually hate is overcooked cabbage that smells like gym socks and regret.
Try this instead:
Cook it in butter or bacon grease
Add garlic and onion
Use smoked paprika, Cajun seasoning, or chili flakes
Let it caramelize slightly
Pair it with fatty protein
Totally different experience.
Cabbage doesn’t need to taste “healthy.”
It just needs to taste good enough to keep showing up in your meals.
Final Thoughts
If I had to pick one of the most underrated foods in America right now, cabbage would be near the top of the list.
Cheap.Filling.Versatile.Gut-friendly.Blood-sugar friendly.Loaded with beneficial compounds.
And unlike most trendy health foods… it’s been helping humans for generations before social media influencers started putting chlorophyll in mason jars.
Sometimes the best foods aren’t exotic.
Sometimes they’re sitting quietly in the produce aisle waiting for people to stop ignoring them.
And by the way, if you ever have trouble deciding what to eat with your cabbage, I created a free meal generator with recipes! Lock in whatever foods you have on hand OR make it completely random. Never ask “What’s for Dinner?” again! Watch the first video below to learn how to use it and ENJOY!
