More on Maltodextrin
If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you already know I’m not a fan of sugar. But today we’re going after something even worse—something Big Food LOVES to slip into “healthy” products because they know you won’t recognize it.
I’m talking about maltodextrin.
And trust me… this stuff makes sugar look innocent.
Why Maltodextrin Is Worse Than Sugar
If you didn’t watch my video, let’s start with the basics:
Maltodextrin is not a sugar. It’s not a sweetener. It’s not a carb. It’s pure glucose.
Chemically, it’s literally chains of glucose molecules linked together from starch… and your body breaks it apart almost instantly. So even though it doesn’t taste sweet, your bloodstream reacts like you just took a shot of liquid sugar.
Here’s where it gets wild:
Maltodextrin spikes your blood sugar FASTER than table sugar.
Table sugar has a glycemic index around 65. Maltodextrin can hit 105–185.
That means it enters the bloodstream almost immediately, dumping glucose so fast your pancreas has to scramble just to keep up.
If you’re insulin resistant, prediabetic, diabetic, overweight, or dealing with cravings — maltodextrin is basically pouring gasoline on the fire.
It hits your gut microbiome hard.
Most people don’t know this part:
Maltodextrin has been shown to:
Promote dysbiosis (bad bacteria overgrowth)
Increase E. coli adhesion to the intestinal wall
Suppress some of your body’s natural antimicrobial defenses
Contribute to leaky gut
This matters because gut imbalance leads to cravings, inflammation, immune issues, and weight-loss resistance.
And yes — this happens even if your blood sugar seems normal.
It hides in “healthy” foods.
Food manufacturers love maltodextrin because it’s cheap, it thickens beautifully, and it makes low-calorie foods feel “full.”
You’ll find it in:
“Keto” snacks
Electrolyte powders
Vitamins and supplements
Protein powders
Gluten-free products
Sauces & salad dressings
Seasoning packets
Medical nutrition shakes
“Diabetic-friendly” products (the irony…)
If you see maltodextrin, the product is NOT low-carb — I don’t care what the label says.
It turns into glucose the moment it hits your mouth.
I tell people all the time:
“Maltodextrin converts to sugar the second it touches the tongue.”
It’s not a perfect explanation, but close enough to get the point across.
Your saliva contains amylase, which immediately begins breaking maltodextrin down into pure glucose. That means:
No slow digestion
No fiber buffering
No delay
Your blood sugar rises now
It messes with hunger and cravings.
Because maltodextrin spikes your glucose so fast, your insulin slams upward too — and when insulin overshoots, you crash.
That crash triggers:
More cravings
More hunger
More eating
More fat storage
There’s a reason people say “I eat low-carb but I’m still hungry all the time.”Then we check the labels… and there it is.
THE TAKEAWAY
Sugar is bad.But maltodextrin? It’s sugar in disguise — and it hits harder, faster, and deeper than the real thing.
So here’s your action step:
Check your labels this week.If you see maltodextrin in something you eat regularly, unless it’s the version or use I talked about in the video, swap it out and watch what happens to your energy, cravings, and blood sugar within a few days.
Your future self will thank you.
